Thoresby Hall – painting on canvas.
This is an impressionistic painting of Thoresby Hall, a grade I listed 19th-century country house in Budby, Nottinghamshire.
It lies 2 miles north of Ollerton. It is one of four neighbouring country houses and estates in the Dukeries in north Nottinghamshire all occupied by dukes at one time during their history.
The house is now a hotel. It stands in Thoresby Park which has been owned by the Pierrepont family since 1600. The family has built 3 houses in the park, the first, a Jacobean mansion, was burnt down. The second, designed by John Carr of York was demolished. This was to make way for Anthony Salvin’s design, which was built by the 3rd Earl Manvers in 1860. The impressive Great Hall, with minstrels’ gallery at the west end, is 62 feet long and 46 foot high. (This is where afternoon tea is now served. I can highly recommend it as an extravagant indulgence.) The house descended to the 6th Earl who died in 1955 without a male heir and the title thereby became extinct. The house was sold to the National Coal Board in 1979 to minimise a perceived threat from coal mining subsidence. Thoresby Hall was sold on the open market ten years later. It was eventually acquired by Warner Leisure Hotels and opened as an hotel in 2000. Thoresby Courtyard, adjacent to Thoresby Hall, is a Grade I listed building. It has been transformed into a retail area including an art gallery, cafe and studios for working crafts people.
This painting is a photographic representations of a scene made from stencils. My original artworks are one of a kind and most of my paintings are large as the technique I use to produce them does not lend itself to working small. This is a contemporary authentic, original acrylic painting that is ideal for a stylish modern interior.
This painting would really look great hanging in any home or office.
